Kaylani's Big Announcement

Sometimes it takes a minute to figure out what Kaylani is saying. It takes even longer than a minute if you're not around her often, but for the most part Mommy and I "speak Kaylani" pretty well. But a few months ago, it took me a couple of minutes myself, and I even had help.

It was the morning of September 23rd and Mommy told me I had to get Kaylani because she wanted to see me. Nothing unusual there, especially since I had gotten home late from NYC the night before and missed bedtime. So around 7:15am, I wandered into Kaylani's room. She stood up as usual, and started to say something. I, of course, went on with my usual routine of turning off her nightlight, opening her blinds, and turning off her humidifier. Still Kaylani was saying something that I couldn't make out so I kept on going.

First I said "Good Morning Kaylani" and asked her how she slept. I gave her a hug and a kiss and knelt down in front of her crib to talk to her. She kept saying "pajamas" and "I have girl" which I thought nothing of since Mommy had told me the night before that she bought Kaylani new pajamas with a little girl on them. But when I noticed Mommy standing in the doorway, and Kaylani looking at her and repeating "I have girl I have girl" while they both smiled, I started to think I was missing something. Boy was I ever.

Slowly it all started to come clear and I started to understand what Kaylani might have been talking about. I looked over at Mommy and she was smiling wide as could be and on the verge of tears. I looked at Kaylani again and looked at her harder to see if I understood correctly. I looked back at Mommy and she confirmed it. It was true. Kaylani was telling me in the clearest way possible. She had a little girl on her pajamas. And with that picture of the little girl were two words that she couldn't be happier to have learned: Big Sister. Kaylani was gonna be a big sister. She had a little girl on her pajamas, but Mommy had a little girl (or boy) in her belly. Wow.

Immediately all the feelings I had over 2.5 years ago when we found out that Mommy was pregnant the first time came flooding back in. But this time, It wasn't just 2 of us hugging and smiling. This time it was 3 of us. We're not entirely sure if Kaylani grasped exactly what being a big sister meant (she does now), but she was happy enough to just be a part of it. Thankfully we have some of this time documented through pictures you can see here. Also thankfully I didn't have a recently peed on stick stuck in my face as I was waking up like last time.

So here we are, 11.5 weeks into Mommy's 2nd pregnancy and its like its all new to us. She just had her 12 week ultrasound and we stared at the little baby inside her with what seemed like the same amazement as the first time. It was still hard to believe a little baby with a head, arms, legs, and a rapidly beating heart were inside there. Just a few weeks ago we saw a dot that was supposedly the same thing. Its grown so much but we have no concept of size even though we've been through this before. Guess we should re-sign up for those Babycenter newsletters to find out if we have a peanut, pear, squash, or some obscure fruit sized baby each week.

Already we've seen differences from the first time, like Mommy not being able to sleep for the last 7 weeks, or the nausea caused by the cooking of food, or of course from the presence of Kaylani. But the biggest difference is that I've got the blog up and running already and I plan on documenting the next 6 months and beyond in addition to the normal blogs on Kaylani. So stick around, keep on reading, and look ahead to May 29, 2011 with us, which is when all three of our lives will change again. And change is always good...especially in this case.

Different Times

So Mommy called me on my way to work this morning which was a bit unusual. Usually she's still sleeping when I leave, but today she was apparently awake and wanted to talk. After a few minutes, that's when she said it. "I'm pregnant." My mouth dropped, my hands tightened around the steering wheel, and I stayed staring straight ahead, completely unaware of my surroundings or the other cars on the highway (if you've seen the episode of Friends where Rachel tells Ross she's pregnant, it was kinda like that).

I babbled a few incoherent thoughts back at her, and couldn't comprehend anything she was saying back to me. None of it made sense to me. How (okay, I actually knew how)? When (knew that one too)? What day was it? Why would that matter? Why was she asking me that? And then, it hit me...it was April Fool's Day, and I was playing the role of the fool.

That was a few years ago, back before we were married and obviously before we knew Kaylani was on the way. It was probably the best (and meanest) April Fools joke that anyone has ever played on me, and to this day, I can still remember everything quite clearly. But now, we're living in different times and the "I'm pregnant" prank just wouldn't work the same way (I might still be freaked out, but not nearly as much). Leave it up to Mommy to come up with something that she knew would have me playing the fool again.

We were in Kaylani's room tonight getting her ready for bath/bedtime. Daddy was changing Kaylani's crib sheet when he heard Mommy say it. "She has a tooth!" Daddy dropped everything and ran over to the changing table, trying to get a good look into Kaylani's mouth with Mommy showing the way. That was quickly followed by "Got you! Happy Fool's Day!" And then Daddy sulked back over to finish changing Kaylani's sheets.

So that's twice now that Daddy has felt like a big time fool, and both times had to do with Kaylani (kinda). Apparently if you want to toy with my emotions, using a baby will work every time. One of these days I'm going to get Mommy back. Not quite sure how, but I will, and it's gonna be great. Then the foolee will turn into the fooler! Oh man, I can't wait until next year now. It's time for me to start plotting, but until then, Happy April Fool's Day!

She's Pregnant!

Before anyone freaks out (or before I do), let me start off by saying Mommy is NOT pregnant again. But, today is the one year anniversary of the day we found out that she was pregnant with Kaylani. To be exact, it's been one year and 13 hours since we found out.

I remember the day extremely well because it was the day that my life officially changed. It ranks up there with the day that Mommy agreed to marry me, the day she married me, and of course the day Kaylani was born. But there were two things that made this day all the more memorable to me.

First of all, it was only 2 days after Mommy had come back from a week long trip to Puerto Rico that she took by herself. It was a long trip that had Daddy remembering why he got married in the first place because having to cook for himself and be alone in the apartment was not his idea of a good time (although Bat Bat and Auntie Shannon did cook for him a few days).

Secondly, and more memorably, was the way Mommy decided to tell Daddy that she was pregnant. Here it is, as I remember it. I could back fill details from Mommy's side of it, but this isn't "The Mommy Diaries" (just kidding Mommy). But seriously, I'm not going to back fill detials. Anyways, let's take a trip back in time, to one year and 13 hours ago.

It was just past 7am on Sunday morning. Daddy was sleeping soundly in bed all warm and cozy. He had stayed up way too late watching bad TV the night before and was looking forward to laying in bed for a few hours in the morning with his wife who was finally home. But it wasn't meant to be.

All of a sudden, Daddy was awake. He wasn't quite sure what happened yet, but he did know something happened. He opened his eyes slowly, and blinked a few times but there was still only a blurry shape in front of him. His brain put together the fact that the blurry shape was Mommy, but it wasn't just Mommy. There was something else there too, and that something was right next to his face.

It wasn't just right next to his face. It was practically IN his face, no more than 3" from his eyes. It slowly came into focus, and when the message finally made it from his eyes to his brain and the realization of what he was staring at came to be, he sat straight up. He didn't even care (or process the fact) that a stick that Mommy peed on no more than 5 minutes ago was inches away from his face. Instead, a huge smile crept across his face and then he looked at Mommy clearly for the first time all morning.

Mommy was filled with tears and shaking as she stood next to the bed. Daddy tried to speak but no words would come out. He got out of bed, and said the first thing he could, which was "Really???" And when Mommy just nodded her head up and down, they hugged and shook together. They were going to have a baby! The little stick Mommy had been peeing on for a few months now (too much information?) finally didn't have the word "NOT" before it! She was pregnant!

Fast forward about 30 minutes and Mommy and Daddy were sitting on the couch of the living room waiting to see if the second pee stick would relay the same message. This time, Daddy would not have to have it inches from his face to find out that Mommy was indeed pregnant (although he would remind Mommy how gross that actually was in retrospect). And, like most parents, they snapped a few pictures off to document the moment. (Most expecting parents do this right? I mean, it's better then saving the stick, which we may have thought about but did not do). And they also came up with the nickname "Chicharron" for our little fetus since Mommy had just spent a week eating a whole lot of chicharron (fried pork skin) in Puerto Rico.

So that was us, one year ago to the day. From that day on, we were set down this wonderful path that has led us to where we are now with our beautiful little girl that we couldn't be happier with. For all you parents out there, feel free to tell your story of how you found out, or how you told your partner because I think every story is a good one. For example, Titi Glendalys told Tio Pritesh over IM while they were at work because she couldn't wait. I guess that's better then a pee stick in the face, but I still wouldn't trade my story for anything in the world.
